[Global] Metaphysical Multicube | Artist. Sookoon Ang

By 아트페

Tell me about yourself.

Hi, this is Sookoon. I am a Singaporean artist based in Paris.
Underpinning my work is an intrinsic connection to existentialist ideas and a desire to convey the essence of flux and momentariness. Through different mediums, I conjure alternative psychological landscapes that transcend the confines of our tangible world, infusing objects and imagery with metaphysical connotations. To put it simply, I create alternation universes and present different perspective of reality. Why? Because there are more in existence than our physical dimension and what we can see or touch. A large part of our existence consists of our inner lives. In my practice, I try to represent the interior (imagination, emotional etc) worlds externally.

Can you explain the name “Metaphysical” Multicube?

I mainly deal with the intangible aspects of our reality.

What are the artworks that have been created from Metaphysical Multicube?

Immortality

Immortality was created during my residency at Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai. Immortality is an ephemeral sculpture-installation that conjures the sense of otherworldliness and represents figments of imagination that became actual, vivid and existing in an external objective space.

Your Love Is Like A Chunk of Gold

Your Love Is Like A Chunk of Gold is a series of bread with crystal growth. The work is a juxtaposition of the real, the supernatural and science fiction. The bread is a familiar item, a comfort food; the crystal (instead of mold) growth made it strange —The bread with crystal growth becomes an oxymoron object of familiarity and strangeness, comfort and pain similar to experiences of love and romance.

Anonymous

Anonymous is the inextricably entwined experience of the ordinary and the sublime. The work engages with magic realism by applying the stereotypical idea of the white apparition.

What is your routine in Multicube?

I feed my dog, Laika and eat breakfast myself while reading the news online or listening to a podcast. I don’t start working until after lunch because it’s hard to start working. A lot of people don’t know but artists do a lot of administrative and logistical work. We write proposals and applications, communicate with galleries and curators on exhibitions via emails or Zoom meetings, create and record budgets for artworks and we write texts for our work. The best time for me to start working on my artwork is evening and night because it feels more peaceful.

What do you do in Multicube when you are off from your art work?

I drink wine, usually Prosecco and eat snacks.

What’s in My Multicube?

  1. My dog, Laika. She is an art lover.
  2. Burger and fries from a shop nearby the Multicube. There is always a long line to get it. I often eat them with my good friend, Brody Condon.
  3. A pop-up book with my sculptures. It was a thoroughly fun book project I did with Browsing Copy, a Singaporean art initiative.

Are you planning to start a new project or an adventure in your Multicube?

Yes, I am experimenting with some new works. I can’t say what is it about because I don’t know it myself. I put things together and consider the assemblage. This process is repeated over and over again when I see something interesting enough to pursue even further..
